As the leaves start to fall and the nights grow longer, Halloween is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for some spooky fun in Norfolk, you’re in for a treat.

This historic county in East Anglia has a rich history of ghostly tales and haunted locations, making it the perfect place to celebrate Halloween.

I’m sharing the best spooky Norfolk Halloween events this October. From haunted houses to ghost tours, there’s something for everyone, so grab your costume and get ready for a frightful night!

The Pumpkin House at Thursford

Dates: 14th, 15th and 21st to 29th October 2023

Location: The Pumpkin House, Brookhill Farm, Fakenham Road, Thursford NR21 0BD

Tickets: The event is free to visit but some activities are chargeable, and pumpkins are charged according to size. Find out more here.

The Pumpkin House is a stunning wooden structure decorated with over 1,000 pumpkins.

All of the pumpkins are available to buy, with standard Jack O’Lanterns and an array of weird and wonderful varieties, including gourds and squashes.

In addition to the Pumpkin House, there are a variety of activities, such as the mini house, perfect for little witches and wizards, and usually decorated with white pumpkins. Climb the hay bale towers, explore the wooded walk and bale maze, play games and get your face painted.

Indulge in delicious cakes, snacks, and drinks available from the pop-up café, including pumpkin cake and pumpkin soup, and if the weather is bad (this is England after all!) take shelter under the large covered marquee.

Halloween Cinema at Fairhaven

Dates: 27th and 28th October 2023

Location: Fairhaven Woodland and Water Gardens, School Road, South Walsham NR13 6DZ

Choose from The Night Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands playing at 5.30pm or Beetlejuice and From Dusk Till Dawn at 8pm.

All these classic Halloween movies will be played on a large outdoor screen – take your own chair or book a beanbag and blanket for the event!

The café will be open before the film starts and you’ll need to take a spooky 40-minute walk through the woods to get to the outdoor cinema.

Snagglefang’s Season of Sneakery at BeWILDerwood

M.R. James Evening of Ghost Stories by Candlelight

As the haunting season begins, The Assembly House invites you to an eerie evening of ghost stories written by the master of the macabre, M.R James, and read by the wonderful Robert Lloyd Parry. This intimate theatre production will take place in the atmospheric Music Room, performed by candlelight.

Mr. Lloyd Parry will be performing the classic A Warning to the Curious, set in Seaburgh in Suffolk (a thinly veiled disguise for the seaside town of Aldeburgh) and Lost Hearts, a chilling tale of ghostly children and dark magic.

Guests will be welcomed to The Assembly House with a glass of Victorian punch and a spiced shortbread soul cake, traditionally made to commemorate the dead. Something wicked this way comes, and you won’t want to miss it!

Fairground Frights at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach

Dates: 25th to 29th October 2023

The Pleasure Beach has introduced two revamped walk-through scare mazes: the completely overhauled ‘Workshop’ and major changes in the ‘Not So Fun Factory’. Along with these mazes, two of their rides feature scare actors.

Snails and Scary Tales make a return, as well as the Haunted Hotel, both featuring brand new characters never seen before.

The spooky roaming actors have always been a major attraction, and with a team of fifteen roaming characters, you’ll be terrified when least expecting it!

To provide the best Halloween tunes, the Pleasure Beach has teamed up with the legendary Club Tropico Music.

Don’t forget to try the Halloween drinks and cocktails available at both The Pleasure Beach Inn and the Carousel Bar, and the end-of-season firework display on the 29th.

The Big C’s Halloween Masquerade Ball

The Fen train will be running through the edge of the haunted woods, hoping it doesn’t need to stop at the old abandoned crossing or the wilderness swamp.

The savouries and scones are served as usual but the top tier of your afternoon tea stand is devoted to all things deliciously Halloween and includes:

  • The Vampire’s Wedding Cake; ravishing red layers of almond gateau opera sponge, sandwiched with heavenly cream cheese frosting and blood strawberry coulis.
  • Ghoul Friend; a carrot cake cupcake, with cinnamon frosting and a sugar ghost.
  • Witch’s Familiar; a speckled white chocolate frog with passion fruit filling.
  • Jack o’ Lantern Dodger; an orange shortbread biscuit sandwiched together with ghoulishly good raspberry jam.

Today, you can meet his associate John Stearne and learn all about life during the dark era of witch hunts. Discover the secrets of the accused witches and the trials they faced, and gain a deeper understanding of the superstitions and beliefs of the time.
